Youth Partnership Uganda – Pig Rearing Cohort #3

Project Background:

In the aftermath of a devastating landslide that impacted 147 households, Youth Partnership Uganda (YPU) acted swiftly, collaborating with the local government to assess and address the crisis. Families faced displacement, prompting YPU, alongside authorities, to take proactive measures to aid the affected communities.

Partnering with Youth Partnership Uganda since 2021, The Giving Exchange (TGE) has contributed to reaching 60 households through two pig-rearing cohorts. However, the work is far from complete, with 87 households still in need of support.

Cohort Expansion:

The first two cohorts covered 40% of the total identified households, and with the third cohort, YPU aims to reach 61%, showcasing significant expansion in their commitment to sustainable solutions for affected families. In 2023, TGE funded this crucial cohort, further strengthening household income through pig-rearing initiatives.

Further Tragedy:

Devastatingly, some households in this cohort endured an additional tragedy – the loss of their children in a recent rebel attack claiming 43 lives. Acknowledging the profound trauma experienced, YPU initiated psychosocial support to help parents cope with this heartbreaking aftermath. The community is recovering.

Long-Term Vision:

Beyond immediate relief, YPU envisions establishing its pig farm, offering training to community farmers and selling pigs for personal sustainability and farm management. This innovative approach not only addresses economic needs but also creates employment opportunities for local youth, ensuring a self-sustaining future.

YPU closely collaborates with the Kasese Sub County government in Uganda, leveraging their support to implement various projects and assist other vulnerable beneficiaries. This synergy ensures a comprehensive and sustainable approach to community development.

The Giving Exchange Project Funding:

To facilitate the third cohort, TGE donors provided financial support, creating secure semi-permanent structures for the pigs. These structures protect against theft, maintain cleanliness, and provide shelter during the rainy seasons, ensuring the success and sustainability of the pig-rearing project.

This project tracks the number of beneficiaries trained, the number of pigs birthed and raised, and the income generated. Qualitatively, it trains the community in new skills, improves nutrition, and increases access to education for the children of beneficiary families.

Stay tuned for more updates about the project's progress. YPU's commitment to resilience continues to inspire, proving that even in the face of tragedy, communities can rise and rebuild with unwavering determination.
