The Giving Exchange successfully raised $7,740 to support a pig rearing project for the Umoja Investment Self Help Group in Nyeri, Kenya. The organization includes 20 adults who combine their savings and start sustainable projects through loans. Each of the projects that the group funds enable beneficiaries to repay the loans while concurrently supporting themselves. The size of the projects the Umoja Investment Self Help Group can finance is restricted by their limited capital.

TGE funds support Umoja Self Help Group’s self-sustaining pig farm and feed production. The initial effort includes the cost of 5 pregnant pigs, the construction of the pig pen and machines to make pig food for the use of the farm and to sell to other community farmers to generate income. Piglets produced from the initial pigs are sold to other farmers, increasing the farm’s revenue.The profit from the pig farm also is being used to expand the farm with more pigs with an ultimate goal of expanding to an operation that includes 500. The profit also helps the Umoja Investment Self Help Group finance loans for other sustainable projects.
