The Solution
At The Giving Exchange, we provide business training and seed capital that equip local leaders to create self-sustainable micro-enterprises benefiting their community.
Our Model
We believe the most powerful solutions to poverty come from within communities, built by the people who know them best.
The Giving Exchange invests in local leaders across East Africa who have the entrepreneurial spirit and community commitment to build something that lasts, but who need access to training, mentorship, and capital to get there.
Our model works in three connected stages:
1. Train
Through our BLOOM program, we provide structured business education to emerging entrepreneurs. Participants learn the practical skills to launch and run a sustainable enterprise: financially viable, operationally sound, socially impactful, and environmentally responsible.
2. Mentor
Training continues outside of the classroom. Our in-country Head of Training walks alongside BLOOM participants as they put their learning into practice, helping them navigate challenges and grow with confidence.
3. Invest
Graduates who complete BLOOM certification are eligible to apply for up to $5,000 USD seed capital funding to launch or scale their enterprise. We also invest in established partner organizations through enhancement funding, helping proven projects expand their reach or launch new branches.
BLOOM: Our Business Training Program
BLOOM (Building Leaders through Opportunity, Ownership, and Mentorship) is the training foundation of our model.
We identify individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to lasting impact, people who are already recognized leaders within their communities. Most participants are social entrepreneurs between the ages of 20 and 40, running small or informal businesses in agriculture, skilled trades, or local services. They are motivated by both income and impact. What they lack is access to formal business knowledge.
BLOOM changes that through six curriculum modules, each building on the last:
1. Mindset & Confidence
2. Opportunity Identification & Simple Market Research
3. Finding Capital & Starting Small
4. Bookkeeping & Basic Money Management
5. Simple Business Planning
6. Social Impact & Simple Reporting
By the end of the program, participants graduate with a plan, a network, and the confidence to lead.
After BLOOM
Graduates with a viable business plan can apply for seed capital investment from The Giving Exchange. Our funds help them move from idea to operation. Past recipients have launched bakeries, agricultural enterprises, tailoring shops, and more.
For our longer-term partners (organizations that have demonstrated strong results over time), we offer enhancement funding to help them scale what's working or open new branches serving more community members.
Every investment we make is designed to create enterprises that sustain themselves, employ others, and multiply their impact over time.
Our Goals for 2026
This year, The Giving Exchange is running three BLOOM cycles: training 120 leaders from 60 organizations across East Africa.
By the end of 2026, we aim to:
Fund 40 new enterprises with $5,000 USD in seed capital each
Reach a minimum of 2,000 people through the enterprises those leaders build
Support at least 4 partner organizations with enhancement funding to scale proven impact
Your support funds the training, mentorship, and seed capital that turn local leaders into lasting change.
