A Computer-training Program and Internet Cafe for Kyarumba Group

Kyarumba Child Development Centre (KCDC) in Kyarumba, Uganda, began the set-up of its new information technology classrooms and internet café in November 2022. More than 171 people have been trained and over $100 of profit was generated.

Here’s what our beneficiaries shared in their last progress report:

Since the start of the project, numerous achievements have been registered, including but not limited to, exposure of ICT gadgets to the users, watching and streaming of videos, and most notably the 2022 Qatar FIFA World cup and the subsequent matches in other leagues, internet services to the numerous groups including computer lessons to different categories.

Also in this period, some youths acquired skills in connecting a video and a projector. As of now, four boys can do the connectivity on their own.

We carried out one outreach to a secondary school, in which we informed the school community on the availability of ICT Equipment and services at KCDC. During this school’s long holiday, many students and staff—many of which are from the school we went in for the outreach—were available at the facility to access services.

Several topics were covered, most notably, introduction to computer systems and information technology, including the history of computers, computer evolution, computer development, application of ICT, hardware parts of a computer, sub themes system unit, CPU and main memory, memory and storage sizes, microcomputers and microprocessors, secondary storage, input and output devices. We also taught computer software that includes system software, operating systems, utility programs, machine language, using the computer, powering the computer, UPS, and application software.

Throughout this period, each class day took about three hours. So far, there have been 34 class days, totaling 102 hours of skills training.

Festo, the project manager, is now eagerly planning an expansion of the program because of its popularity.
