A Second Pig-rearing Program with Youth Partnership Uganda

Back in 2021 Youth Partnership Uganda (YPU) collaborated with The Giving Exchange to implement 30 single-home pig-rearing farms to support community members who had been adversely affected by floods and landslides in Kiraro and Kanyatsi Parishes in 2020.

Following their success in their first pig-rearing program, YPU received a request from the Kitholhu sub-county to implement the same program in three other parishes.

Thirty female piglets from their first pig-farm program were donated to 30 new beneficiaries, and six additional boars were added, which they have learned is necessary for a faster reproduction process and to mitigate the spread of disease.

The 30 households’ heads have been trained in modern piggery management that involves pigpen construction, record keeping, management, feeding, disease control, sanitation and hygiene. A street business model has been integrated into the project, a model that has been tested by YPU and has demonstrated promising results in improving household incomes.

Ultimately, Youth Partnership Uganda hopes to launch its own pig farm and use the income generated to continue providing sustainable projects for its community.
